Farm Visit: Teachers from Yuan Ching Secondary School

We had the pleasure of welcoming a thoughtful group of educators from Yuan Ching Secondary School to our farm for a learning journey rooted in curiosity and connection.

From the moment they arrived, the teachers were eager to understand what goes on behind the scenes of a local egg farm. What may look simple on a supermarket shelf carries layers of care, science, and responsibility. As we walked through the farm, conversations flowed — about hen welfare, feed quality, biosecurity practices, and how we ensure a steady supply of fresh eggs to Singapore families.

One of the most engaging highlights of the visit was a hands-on activity centred around a simple question: How can we tell if eggs are fresh?

Instead of just explaining the theory, we invited the teachers to crack eggs themselves and observe closely. The focus? The yolk.

Teachers carefully lifted the bright, golden yolks to see if they would hold their shape. There was laughter, surprise, and a few delighted gasps! A truly fresh egg reveals itself through a firm, rounded yolk that stays intact and sits high, supported by thick egg white. In contrast, an older egg tends to flatten out — the yolk loses height, and the white becomes more watery and dispersed. To everyone’s delight, the yolks held beautifully — a simple but powerful demonstration of freshness that could be seen, felt, and experienced firsthand. In this moment, science was brought to life in real time.

Beyond the freshness test, we continued sharing about Singapore’s food resilience journey and the role local farms play in strengthening food security. The teachers expressed thoughtful reflections on how exposing students to local production systems can change how we value homegrown efforts.

Throughout the visit, what stood out most was the alignment between farming and teaching. Both require patience. Both demand consistency. Both nurture growth — whether in hens or in young minds.

We ended the day with meaningful conversations and shared appreciation. Hosting educators is always especially heartening for us. When teachers visit, the impact multiplies — because what they learn here doesn’t stay on the farm. It travels back to classrooms and into the minds of students.

To the wonderful team from Yuan Ching Secondary School, thank you for spending the day with us, for your curiosity, and for your openness to learn. We hope the cracked eggs, proud yolks, and farm stories stay with you — and perhaps inspire the next generation to look a little closer at what’s on their plate. From farm to classroom, learning continues to grow.
